Canceled Star Wars Game Was the Bioware-Style ARPG That Fans Deserved

17 August 20263 Mins Read

Star Wars has always been the perfect playground for expansion, whether in comics, novels, or video games. However, despite the success of the latter, with games like Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order from developer Respawn and BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, not all Star Wars games are created equal. In fact, some never get the chance to even debut in the first place.

When it comes to canceled Star Wars games, most people remember the gut-wrenching loss of EA and Respawn’s Mandalorian game, but as MP1st recently revealed, another has surfaced: Star Wars: Magellan.

Unlike EA’s Mandalorian game, Magellan is a completely unknown project headed by the now-closed game studio Echtra Games. Echtra Games was known for its work on Torchlight III, but when its owner, Zynga, closed it in June 2025, all work on Torchlight (and Magellan) ceased.

Thanks to an anonymous Echtra employee who posted Magellan development materials as part of their portfolio, we now know more details about what the developer was working on with this Star Wars action role-playing game before Zynga shuttered the studio. First, the two protagonists: a Jedi Twi’lek labeled in gameplay material as “The Hunted Jedi,” and a Mandalorian warrior known as “The Exile.” In-game files also referred to them as Cleric and Triggerman. Secondly, it looks as though there would be multiplayer, with players able to fight as the Jedi or Mandalorian, mowing down Stormtroopers, droids, and even creatures.

MP1st also reveals that, beyond the gameplay clips, the game was set to feature an “NPC Bond system.” While we only saw a couple of characters in the clips, the idea seems to be that players could build relationships with NPCs, and it would affect the story. Though we don’t know exactly if this means romance or friendship would be included, building relationships in an RPG feels very BioWare.

What is particularly notable is the Zynga influence in Magellan, especially in its Twi’lek and Stormtrooper designs, which resemble the style of Zynga’s multiplayer Star Wars game, Star Wars: Hunters, now shut down. However, the gameplay aspect, particularly the lightsaber abilities and shooting, does look fundamentally different, making us believe that this wouldn’t be a mobile or free-to-play game like Hunters was.

It’s always a terrible day when a Star Wars game is revealed to be canceled, especially one that looked as though it had plenty of potential, like Magellan. At least Star Wars fans will be able to find some solace in the fact that there are two upcoming Star Wars games still on the way this year, with Star Wars: Zero Company releasing Aug. 27 and Star Wars: Galactic Racer on Oct 6.
