When you’re decorating a room, your first thought is probably coming up with a color scheme. But texture is what gives a space depth, warmth and a cozy, layered look that really makes a space feel like home. Without it, even a beautifully decorated room can feel a little flat. The good news is that adding texture doesn’t take a lot of effort or even style savviness for that matter. A plush throw rug softens a hard floor, wallpaper brings subtle dimension to an accent wall, and a nubby bouclé chair adds visual interest while giving your room a pretty place to sit.
The fun part is mixing different textures together. Pair smooth wood with a woven basket, crisp linen with a chunky knit throw or sleek furniture with something soft and fluffy. These contrasts help a room feel more collected. And sometimes, one cozy piece is all it takes to make a noticeable difference. A faux fur rug, for example, can bring softness and a little bit of luxury to a bedroom, living room or reading nook—without requiring you to redecorate the entire space.

Mongolian Faux Fur 36-Inch Round Area Rug, $15 at Five Below
Five Below
Five Below is selling a really lovely blush pink Mongolian Faux Fur Round Rug for $15, and it’s selling fast (my nearest store only has a couple left, but it’s still available for shipping). At 36 inches round, it’s small but mighty. You can use it to add a little softness in front of a vanity space (your feet will thank you) or as a landing spot next to your bed. You can also use it under a petite side table or plant stand to highlight that area with a little more character.

I’ve covered a lot of what to do with a small accent rug, but it’s a good idea to get into the don’ts as well.
With a 36-inch round rug, the biggest mistake is treating it like a full-size area rug. It’s better as a decorative accent than the foundation of an entire seating area. Avoid placing it under a coffee table in a large living room because it will likely look undersized and disconnected from the furniture around it. The same goes for putting it under a dining table or trying to fit an entire chair on top of it—the proportions can feel a little awkward. You don’t want that. Otherwise, go forth and add texture to your space with this beauty.
