The past decade of food culture in this city has been defined by virality, exclusivity and restaurants designed to feed our Instagram pages more than ourselves — but this year’s openings are telling a different story.
Universally, across all aspects of culture, people are gravitating back towards an old way of the world. A world that’s slower-paced, more intentional, and fueled by coloured histories that are deeply personal. Vinyl records are replacing playlists, dinner parties are replacing nights out and handmade pottery is replacing mass-produced decor scattered across people’s homes. The “analogue year” isn’t just changing our screen time or the ways we decorate our homes; it’s a cultural shift seen in every aspect of our lives, reshaping even the ways we eat.
Toronto’s newest opening, Rose’s Pantry, is the latest reflection of this very shift.
The new pantry and café, born out of chef Shauna Godfrey’s personal labours, is located at 141 Robert St. and attached to her Harbord Village restaurant success, Maven. Her newest spot brings a breath of fresh air to the city’s dining scene, unsatisfied with chasing trends or creating the city’s next viral bite. Instead, it’s built around something much simpler, and much closer to Godfrey’s heart: food that makes people feel at home.
Inspired by the recipes and traditions of the women in her family, Godfrey launched Godfrey’s Supper Club during the pandemic, rediscovering what first made her fall in love with feeding people. This eventually evolved into Maven, the contemporary neighbourhood restaurant she opened on Harbord Street in December of 2024, where Jewish and Eastern European family traditions meet polished, modern cooking.
Now, Rose’s Pantry feels like a natural next step.
The name itself couldn’t be more fitting. Rose’s Pantry, named after both of Godfrey’s bubbies, not only takes inspiration for the name but for the food itself. Godfrey recalls a time when one of her Bubby Roses brought her down to her basement pantry, uncontrollably laughing while proudly showing off a pantry stocked with canned goods and dried staples to feed an entire family for years. This memory became the foundation for the concept.
Walking into the space, it’s easy to see how Godfrey reflected this. Exposed oak shelving lines the walls, filled with ceramics, vintage glassware, teapots, candles, and eclectic keepsakes that feel like a collection built over generations. Stained glass windows, old-school white tiling, and shelves of pantry staples give the room the warmth of an old family kitchen with an elevated touch.
The sense of familiarity continues with the menu. The shelves are stocked with prepared meals, pantry staples, fresh breads, nostalgic sweets, high-end tinned goods and seasonally rotating soft serve alongside grab-and-go sandwiches that have been prepared with care only seen in your grandmother’s kitchen and Michelin-starred restaurants; the star of the show being a herby egg salad sandwich prepared with both soft and hard-boiled eggs piled only on Maven’s famous challah Pullman loaf. An easy runner-up is the smoked sprouts and albacore tuna salad topped with homemade pickles. Pair either of the sandwiches with a pesto farfalle salad packed with bocconcini, cherry tomatoes, and sundried tomatoes, and this is the lunch of every woman’s dreams.
As we all know, a menu is nothing without a sweet treat–and just like your grandmother’s house, there’s no shortage of sugar here. Between the rotating soft serves and reimagined pastries, a sweet tooth will always find a way to be satisfied: picture blueberry buns as an open-faced blueberry kolache topped with sweet cream cheese and jammy blueberries. Future plans include weekly soups, breakfast sandwiches, rotating traditional and non-traditional sandwiches (shnitzel and barbecued salami have both been mentioned), and possibly even full-service catering.
The philosophy behind Rose’s Pantry couldn’t have come at a better time, and Godfrey herself knows it.
“I think people are craving comfort, nourishment, and routine after a long day,” Godfrey tells the world on the Rose’s Pantry page. “We’re kind of going back to this handmade, personal-touch kind of thing. People want that kind of connection.”
