Whitecourt is a walker’s paradise, providing an endless path of trails leading to some of the best Alberta views. Not only that, but it has a rich history dating back to the 1890s.

According to the Town of Whitecourt, the original inhabitants, the Woodland Cree Nation, called this beautiful area Sagitawah, or “the place where the rivers meet.” Located on the eastern border of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Whitecourt is nestled in a valley at the confluence of four waterways. These four include the Athabasca River, McLeod River, Sakwatemau (Eagle) River, and Beaver Creek.

Sagitawah officially became Whitecourt in 1910 after a post office was constructed and, according to the town, the Post Master in Greencourt registered the name as Whitecourt.

The town has also branded itself the Snowmobile Capital of Alberta with over 485 kilometres of groomed trails in the area.

Now, Whitecourt is known for its extensive trail system, outdoor recreation opportunities, and vibrant urban amenities. However, we’re going to be highlighting some of the best trails and all the information you’ll need to take a hike in this Alberta town.

Where to find trails in Whitecourt

Surrounded by boreal forested lands and numerous connecting rivers, Whitecourt allows itself to be a popular destination for camping, river boating, fishing, hiking, ATVing, mountain biking, and golfing. In the winter, many outdoor enthusiasts visit the community for hunting, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating as well.

These trails are great for any one of these activities; just make sure you’re following all rules and regulations.

One of our personal favourite trails in Whitecourt is the Hard Luck Canyon Loop. It’s a short one-kilometre hike that leads you to and from a small but gorgeous waterfall. On the first part of the trail, you’ll even find signage with historic facts about the area.

If you want to take a look at all the trails yourself, we totally get it. You’re able to hop on the town’s website and look at their Trail Map. Here, there are nine trails with extended information for you to sift through, not to mention the ability to filter based on their difficulty.

There’s also more information for snowmobilers thanks to the Whitecourt Trailblazers. These folks look after the extensive network of trails in partnership with other organizations like the Town itself. You won’t find anyone else doing what these volunteers are doing.

In essence, get your hiking boots packed and your ATV ready to go; your visit to Whitecourt is going to be nothing short of exciting.
